This seems foolhardy considering the source of the birds and virus has not
yet been identified. These shows are far from essential in the grand scheme
of things and DEFRA are showing typically lousy understanding of a
situation.
Show's bird flu measures lifted

An outbreak was been confirmed at a smallholding in Conwy
A ban on showing chickens and ducks at the South of England Show next week,
after a case of bird flu in Wales, has been lifted.
The show is held every year at Ardingly, West Sussex, by the South of
England Agricultural Society which was founded in 1967.
Organisers of the show had said chickens and ducks would not be shown after
a ruling from Defra.
But Defra has now said the restriction has been lifted.
A spokeswoman for Defra said: "There are now no restrictions. Organisers
will be under the general conditions of their licence."
In Wales, bird flu has been confirmed on a Conwy smallholding, but tests
have since proved negative on a Llyn peninsula farm.
The first case of avian flu in Wales was confirmed on 24 May among chickens
on a smallholding near Corwen in Denbighshire.
The National Public Health Service for Wales has said the health risk to the
general public is low.

just a thought
If this had happened three or four years ago before the whole AI thing blew
up, would anyone have noticed, other than someone who bought a few birds
from a show, they died, he played merry hell and the auctioneer gave him the
money back?

A few birds - probably not; and there are probably a few who have gone this
way in this instance
However to lose 15 in a few weeks might well get the vet involved.
If they had involved the vet hi might think of various possibles like
Newcastles and other such are a concern.
Vets tend to send poultry carcasses away for Post Mortems.
Would the auction company pay up 3 weeks after they went home if the birds
had not died immediately?
They would ask for a vet report.
I would still be happier with the source farm better ID'd - there are some
uncomfortable possibilities I would like to see discounted.

I agree with you on that one, if we have an outbreak of something worth
making a fuss about, then on general principles alone they should trace it
back before they start slapping each other on the back
