|
|
The situation in Wales and the North East of England around the H7N2 virus
continues as expected.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/6699595.stm
There has obviously been a lot of work done tracing those who may have been
in contact with the virus from infected birds, either at the market or birds
sold from the market.
Sensible precautionary measures are being taken.
The figures of reported mild infection may well continue to rise. Its been
several weeks now and its quite possible people who were there have had a
few symptoms but dismissed them as just flu bugs doing the rounds.
There will have been a lot of people who bought small or single lots of
birds. Any of those who may have died since then could have been written off
as a bad market buy.
It seems that action is being taken to trace all these buyers and the other
sellers as well to check on them too.
I will be interested to hear where the birds came from in the first place -
thats the original contact, not the smallholding in Wales.
The lack of lots of other incidences rising to the surface with the media
attention suggests small breeder rather than large. Lets hope so, not that I
would wish this on anyone but some of the potential candidates in the area
have a very large customer base which could have much more serious
repercussions with regard to containing the virus.

Today's Daily Post states:
Meanwhile the owners of a second North Wales farm linked to
the outbreak last night said tests so far had proved
negative.
Health officials descended on Pant Glas, a farm at
Efailnewydd, near Pwllheli, on Saturday to carry out blood
tests on more than 100 ducks, geese, hens and guinea fowl.
They returned on Sunday to carry out more tests on poultry
kept half a mile away from Pant Glas.
The results of those tests, which were also sent to
laboratories in London, are not yet known.
The decision was taken to test poultry after it emerged
farmer Elwyn Hughes took ducks to Chelford market, which has
been linked to the outbreak, on May 7.
Mr Hughes’ dad William Emlyn Hughes, 82, said: “One result
has come through showing that we are clear. It’s the best
news ever.”
Last night they were still waiting for the results of tests
taken on Sunday.

also from Daily Post:
Last night the number of people who may have been exposed to
bird flu rose dramatically to 142, – 47 in a household
setting, 14 in the school and a further 81 at work.
Some 12 people are thought to have been infected but none is
seriously ill.
