Any Thunderbird users around please?
I'm having a problem with it connecting to my mail servers. Initially
it says all 3 servers cannot be found but eventually it finds and
downloads from 2 of them. The third still won't download.
The problem has only arisen since I moved to broadband and connect
through a router.
Any suggestions on settings please?

Assuming you have not changed *anything* in Thunderbird I can only
assume the problem is with the router, like not having the correct ports
open. However, the fact that you can, eventually, collect some mail
rather disproves that.

Suggest you carefully check *all* the account settings in Thunderbird
for all three accounts.
If you can revert temporarily to dialup (emergency number with your ISP
or a known 0845 dialup with someone else) you can check that all three
accounts work properly.
Final thought, are you with a new ISP? If so it is just possible that
you need to be connected to the appropriate ISP to connect to each
account and/or you may need secure authentication, or similar, if not
connected to the appropriate ISP. Think this is most unlikely, but
possible.

I use Thunderbird and don't have any such problems. When I changed to
broadband I did not need to make any changes to settings for e-mail. I
wonder if it is a problem with your ISP (the one providing your broadband)?

Done that - but thought I may have missed something obvious like not
changing something I should have changed!

Still have a dial up account as standby and it collects fine from them
first try.

Nope - just upgraded with the same ISP
Its a puzzler - that fact that is does get there eventually is really
odd

Its a mystery how its happening, or not IYSWIM. |
All I did was to upgrade to BB with the same ISP and for some reason it
has an erratic collection rate.
I'd tried all permutations including downloading with AV and fireall
turned off but still the same effects.
Maybe it will sort itself - we'll see.
Thanks to you and Old Codger for the advice though - at least I know I
didn't miss the obvious!

I think I would be scratching around the router settings and/or asking
the ISPs support folk for assistance. As Howard says, it might be a
problem within your ISP, particularly if they operate traffic management
(throttling of specific services).
Just thought to look, you are with Plusnet. My guess is that that is
where your problem lies, whatever their CS may say. They do operate
traffic shaping on, I think, all BB accounts. Haven't heard of this
affecting e-mail but I wouldn't be too surprised, particularly if they
are not Plusnet e-mail accounts. Try posting on their newsgroups or forums.
What a pity you can't just try another BB provider, as you can with dialup.

Check out the forums on
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/
(used to be ADSLGuide)
if you can get your MAC from Plusnet you could try some of the
providers with no minimum contract such as A&A (hint hint) or Zen, for
a month, then move on
agreed though it's not so easy
I dunno what the original fault might be but I'm having an
intermittent problem, every so often I can't get out, can't even ping
my router, then suddenly it's back. Either it's some weird conflict
between Kaspersky and Outpost or more likely something has been hosed
by a Windows Update, I think it was about last Patch Tuesday when this
started occurring and it's been a suspiciously long time since a
Micro$oft update hosed anything on my systems . . . |

Rather more expensive than Plusnet also, admittedly for a significantly
better service.

Yes but A&A is run by a drooling retard, and that's good enough reason
not to use them. |

Well, after fiddling around a bit I have discovered an obscure setting
in the AV and got it sorted!
I *thought* I had swirched the AV off completely when I was trying
before but there's a little bit tucked away that really needs ferreting
out to either change or switch off.
All is now working.
<phew>
Thnkas for the various suggestions.
