I've just discovered on the FW site that if you are a lone farmer, you
can smoke in your farmhouse but not in your byre.

This is a result of the new anti smoking regulations.

Wonderful thing, legislation, isn't it?

At least they have given it some thought and only applied it to enclosed
work ares - there was talk initially of a total ban within the
workplace. That would hav meant that as you took the dog down to check
the stock you couldn't een have a smoke in the middle of the field.

I *think* the ban will also include tractor etc cabs as well so be
careful if you fancy lighting up whilst ploughing - the elf 'n' safety
chaps will be out checking!

Certainly many companies are banning smoking in company owned vehiclse -
cars, vans lorries etc.

What about chewing tobacco?

What about it? Do you set fire to it in your mouth?

Can cause ulcer problems in the mouth. Now if you want a kick,
unnoticable (to a certain extent), try snuff.

I once sold wool to a company whose offices were in what is now called
Smithfield, in Dublin, delivered, weighed, the boss invited me into
the office to get paid (while his staff opened the packs and checked
that all was OK), and offered me a pinch of snuff, obtainable from a
shop a few doors up, seemed OK, so he sent an office boy (remember
them?) up to get me a small container of it. I had it in my pocket for
a while, and while admiring the sunset one evening, took a good sniff,
woke up some time later.. Whooee!.

PS, since yonks, there has been a horse fair in the same Smithfield,
now frequented by urban cowboys rather than farmers, I heard that the
police now have a presence there to save the vet that arbitrates on
the soundness of the horses, some things never change.

So how would anyone else know, if you are a lone farmer? (or even a couple).

That was probably cocaine <G>

I'd forgotten all about snuff, used to indulge many years back when
Oop North, mentholated was best, used to freak out the good ol-boys in
the pubs who weren;t expecting a young-un as I was then to enjoy it
